Samsung made the first black-and-white television in 1981 and rose to fame for being the largest television manufacturer of flat panel televisions by 2004. Since then it is the market leader in terms of number of units sold.
In 2007 Samsung introduced World's thinnest 10 mm thick panel, which was further bettered to an unbelievable slim screen, which was only 7.9 mm thick by 2008. Samsung did not stop at that and built a super slim LED television at only 3.9 mm thickness for a 40 inch size. This one was aptly called as "Needle Slim", which is 91% thinner than a conventional LCD. Samsung consistently innovated and improved the performance i.e. full HD resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate and 5000:1 contrast ratio even though when the thickness was substantially reduced. Samsung introduced its first full HD 3D LED in March 2010.
In the same year Samsung also launched 3D Home Theatre which allows 3D images and surround sound at the same time. With this launch, Samsung became the first player to have a complete 3D bouquet - 3D Television, 3D Blu-ray player, 3D content and 3D glasses. Samsung launched Internet TV in 2007 which further evolved into Samsung Smart TV by 2008.
Sony is the third largest television manufacturer in the world after Samsung and LG. Until 2005, Sony used to market its LCDs under the brand name WEGA. Subsequently a new name BRAVIA was introduced to represent Sony's High-definition Flat Panel LCD televisions, Projection TVs, Front Projectors and Home Theatre Range. BRAVIA stands for Best Resolution Audio Video Integrated Architecture. One interesting fact about Bravia is that Sony also sells a range of mobile phones in North America, Japan and Europe by the same name.
